What we’ll walk through

Four questions every Medicare shopper should answer first

The plan that fits one person’s situation doesn’t fit the next. These four lenses keep the conversation grounded in your actual doctors, your actual prescriptions, and your actual calendar — not a glossy brochure.

Supplement vs. Advantage, side by side

Original Medicare plus a Medigap Supplement plan gives you nationwide provider freedom and predictable out-of-pocket costs, while a Medicare Advantage plan bundles medical, drug, and extra benefits (dental, vision, hearing) for a low or zero premium but routes you through a plan network. The right choice depends on the doctors you want to keep, the prescriptions you take, and how often you travel. We line the two structures up side by side so the trade-offs are visible, not buried.

Knowing the enrollment windows

Annual Election Period (AEP) — October 15 to December 7 — is when you can switch Medicare Advantage or Part D drug plans for the coming year. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (January 1 to March 31) lets you swap Advantage plans or move back to Original Medicare once. First-time enrollees, people retiring past 65, and anyone on a Special Enrollment Period triggered by a life change have their own windows. Missing a window can mean waiting a full year, so we check the calendar with you before anything is signed.

Prescriptions, formulary, and tier placement

A plan that looks affordable on premium can cost more than it saves if the drug tier for one of your medications lands in a high-copay tier. We send each carrier the formulary check: drug name, dose, pharmacy preference. Plans that move a single high-cost pill from Tier 3 to Tier 2 can swing total annual cost by hundreds of dollars. That single review is the most-overlooked part of a Medicare check-up, and the one we always run.

Keeping your doctors and your hospital

Networks on Medicare Advantage plans are local. The doctor you have seen for 20 years may be in one plan and out of another — and the difference is invisible on a brochure. Before we recommend a plan we confirm your primary physician, your specialists, and your preferred hospital are in-network, and we flag any renewal that would lose a doctor you actually use. Original Medicare with a Supplement sidesteps most of this; we explain when that flexibility is worth the additional premium.
